What it's like to soak in the carefree atmosphere of a Caribbean island and almost drown on one of its most beautiful beaches, these are just part of our experiences on the island of Barbados during our transatlantic cruise from Europe to the Caribbean.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The next day, December 18, we docked in Bridgetown, Barbados. We were looking forward to this stop on the cruise with great anticipation. Since walking on the pier was prohibited, we had to be transported, not in just any vehicle, but in a rather retro bus, oh boy, from back in the day \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

Upon exiting the terminal, we were once again flooded with offers for cheap transport to the city or various attractions on the island. However, we had informed ourselves in advance that the distances there are short, so we got around everywhere on foot.<\/p>\n
First, we set off along a very beautifully constructed boardwalk that connected the port to the city center.<\/p>\n
Bridgetown is the capital and largest city in the small Caribbean country of Barbados. Barbados is called Little England because in the center of its capital, Bridgetown, stands the local parliament, a replica of the one in London, but on a smaller scale. The main attractions are the Parliament building, the rum factory, and the pelican village (the main arts and crafts center founded by the government).<\/p>\n

Barbados is also the venue for the World Cricket Championship.<\/strong><\/p>\n
We were also warned that deadly dangers lurk on this wonderful island: starting from plants like the manchineel tree, which bears apple-like fruits that are highly poisonous, to no less poisonous spiders and centipedes. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
An exact copy of Trafalgar Square in Great Britain, but on a smaller scale, with the same name, is actually the National Heroes Square of Barbados.<\/p>\n
You can observe both modern and colonial-era architecture. The colonial period is also represented by Anglican churches, which feature the graves of 17th-century Britons. The main language is English, and the currency is the Barbadian dollar.<\/p>\n

Barbados is currently an independent country within the Commonwealth headed by Great Britain.<\/p>\n
As I already mentioned, the British left behind beautiful colonial buildings, a unique botanical garden, a huge library with valuable manuscripts and maps, sugar plantations, a rum factory, a harbor, an Anglican church, and left-hand traffic.<\/p>\n
And so, it was our turn to walk around this island, dreamed of by many people.<\/p>\n
It was Sunday. We found an English (Congregational) church and stayed there for some time. During the service, we noticed that everything regarding what would be preached, the texts of the prayers, and the hymns had been pre-printed. On the walls of the church, there were gravestones, and there was also a graveyard in the churchyard. During the service, the holy baptism of a little Barbadian child took place \ud83d\ude03<\/p>\n

After the service ended, we headed towards the city beach. On the way to the beach, the wind blew away my papers with maps (which are like a natural extension of my hand during excursions \ud83d\ude1c), and I almost lost all the gathered information about sights, navigation, and maps.<\/p>\n
On the way, we passed through several streets where we saw quite poor people. In fact, what made the biggest impression on us was that although the people there are not very well-off, they know how to have a good time \ud83d\ude03 People look genuinely happy, or the more precise word is: carefree. Which in turn made us think \u2013 what is more important in life \u2013 for a person to have everything and at the same time be constantly stressed or the opposite \ud83d\ude03<\/p>\n
The cleanliness in Barbados is not at a particularly high level, but somehow it doesn't look all that bad either.<\/p>\n

The city beach, however, turned out to be unique! As soon as we settled on the beach, it started pouring rain \u2013 after all, we were in a place with a tropical climate. The precipitation here is usually short, but very intense. The sky darkens very quickly, and in a split second, the rain pours down like from a bucket. Fortunately, everything dried up quickly, after which we spent four or five hours on this incredible beach.<\/p>\n
The water was crystal blue, and the beach sloped gently rather than steeply. What impressed us was the white-pink sand. I'm not joking \u2013 there really were small pink pieces in the sand all over the beach. Even Simeon collected sand in a bottle as a souvenir from Barbados. The weather was hot.<\/p>\n
The children really liked the beach and the water. We saw white little fish swimming in the shallow part of the sea.<\/p>\n

Knowing that our children do not like to submerge underwater, and so they could possibly see fish and other underwater beauties, I had bought from Decathlon an inflatable device through which you can snorkel without submerging your head.<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>And so, we come to one of the scariest episodes of my life. In Barbados, I almost drowned. Here is how it happened\u2026 On the same beach we were on, there were locals offering organized boat trips for snorkeling and turtle watching. By the way, turtles can be seen both on the island of Barbados, on the island of Martinique, and on the island of Guadeloupe. However, it seemed quite expensive to us, and given our children who cannot swim, we decided this was not an option for us.<\/p>\n
It turned out the boats were going right across where we had left our towels and didn't look that far from the shore. So I decided to swim over there. I had a mask and snorkel, but no flippers. As I swam over there, on the way there were quite nice views \u2013 all kinds of colorful tropical fish, coral reefs, etc. I was already almost at the boats, but I never saw the said turtles. Also, I was without a life jacket, at about 10-15 meters depth, and I had started getting tired. So I decided that whatever I had seen \u2013 I had seen, it was time to go back. Well, but when I started swimming, swimming, and swimming, then I stopped seeing how far I had reached and it looked as if I hadn't moved an inch. I swam, swam, and swam again, looked again, and it was the same thing.<\/p>\n
Little by little, panic began to take hold of me. I was at about 10 m depth, without a life jacket, and in water that pulls you very strongly inward. As a bonus was the disgustingly salty water, from which I also got terribly thirsty. I saw my husband and children playing on the beach, without even realizing what was happening. Thank God, a couple passed near me who were swimming towards the boats to snorkel, but with one difference \u2013 they had flippers. I asked them for help, and the man grabbed me by the shoulder and took me to the shore. It turned out that flippers are something very necessary for such endeavors. For the first time, I had the feeling that I would really drown, and not just anywhere, but on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Meanwhile, on the way back from the beach, we met other Bulgarians who confirmed that the sea had pulled them too.<\/p>\n
