Traveling from Bulgaria to Hungary

Day 1: From Plovdiv to Szeged (Hungary) – 760 km. – 8:30

The first day of our trip was entirely transit from Plovdiv to Szeged. We covered 760 kilometers in about 8:30. The condition of the road from Sofia to the Bulgarian-Serbian border was in a catastrophic state, as the Europe highway was being built, but a suitable alternative road was not provided. 2 years ago, when we were returning from our Camper trip to the West Balkans and Tuscany the situation was exactly the same, but in different sections. Entering Serbia, however, we were greeted by a brand new highway. In Serbia, we drove 100% only on highways all the way to the border with Hungary. The highway passes even through Belgrade itself - the lack of which years ago led to huge traffic jams.

We were just thinking that we would arrive in the light of Hungary, and here we were unpleasantly surprised by the long queue of the Serbian-Hungarian border. We stayed there for 2 hours. It was not clear what they were checking.

At 18:30 we arrived in Szeged. It is the third largest city in Hungary. This is the birthplace of red pepper. We checked into Lechner4 Residence, which was a newly renovated little lovely apartment in white and gold. Very beautiful place. Too bad our stay was shaping up to be just a few hours.

Szeged City, Hungary

After check-in, we went out for a walk around Szeged. It struck us that the city abounds with very wide streets. In 1879, there was a terrible flood, which destroyed almost all the houses in the city - out of 5,723 houses, only 265 remained. At that time, the then governor of the city decided that he would create a new, modern city on the banks of the Tisza River and the really wide streets And modern buildings were designed just then.

The main sights you were able to see on that frosty evening were:
– The Ferris wheel (in the park at Stefania Street)
– The votive large Catholic cathedral in the center of the city. It had an extremely interesting architecture and was distinguished against the background of the surrounding buildings. Right in the square in front of the cathedral, there was a storm of preparation for the upcoming Christmas bazaar, which we visited when we were already returning from the whole trip.
– Water Tower – Víztorony
– the reflection in the water of the Tisza river of the surrounding buildings

There were several places on the central pedestrian street where brandy and other alcoholic beverages were brewed outdoors. We took potatoes with meat from a street stall, but it turned out to be bacon, and I hate such a thing, so in the end I was hungry...

Szeged was definitely nice for a walk, there were a lot of autumn leaves.

To walk around the center of Szeged, we parked right in front of Szeged University. It is perhaps the first university that impresses me with anything at all, namely the fact that there were an awful lot of statues literally everywhere in and around the university. The building that housed it also had an extremely interesting architecture. In general, the statues in Szeged with a shovel to shovel them - were in so many places, everywhere in the city. This is the city of statues in Hungary, at least in my opinion 🙂
