Archery, horseback riding and stick fighting – all this in the Proto-Bulgarian settlement „Baga-Tur“ in Stara Zagora

Archery, horseback riding, and stick fighting—all of this at the Proto-Bulgarian settlement “Baga-Tur” in Stara Zagora

Baga-Tur is the only school and organization of its kind in the country that aims to remind people of and discuss the values and ideals of the Proto-Bulgarians and their understanding of the world. At the heart of Baga-Tour lies an understanding of the Proto-Bulgarians’ highest spiritual achievements, which the organization presents in a modern and engaging way. The school is attended by people of all ages and organizes various events—camps, Proto-Bulgarian-style birthday parties, open classes for children, team-building activities, and more.

School Baga-Tur is one of the most interesting attractions in Stara Zagora and it's a must-visit when you're in the area of Ayazmoto park – one of the largest parks in Stara Zagora. The main and daily activities are realized through spectacles, schools for students and demonstrations and workshops from the life of the Bulgarians.

Where are you?

The visually appealing “Aul Baga-Tur, Stara Zagora” complex is located within the Stara Zagora Zoo. The zoo is a pleasant place to take a walk with the kids, but, to be completely honest, the entire zoo facility is in need of improvement.

Aul Baga-Tur is open only during the warm months of the year.

What?

The Baga-Tur center itself is built in an ancient style and takes us back to the time of the Asparukh Bulgarians. There is an exhibition corner with a yurt. Exposure to replicas of antique clothing and weapons that you can touch or even try. Classes with students are held at specialized sites for mastering ancient skills - sword and shield fighting, scourge, reflex bow shooting, spear, etc. There is also a central arena where they show what they have learned during a demonstration.

How much?

The prices shown in the picture below are for a one-time visit. Now when requesting full-time training (at least once a week), the conditions are discussed and an individual offer is prepared.

Each “session” begins with a welcome from bagir (this is the person who will be working with your group), and he will direct you to the area where you can leave your personal belongings, bags, and jackets so they won’t get in the way during the lesson. The aul has running water and a restroom.

After that, the bagir will show you the old weapons, clothing and knives and tell you interesting facts about them - what they looked like, how they were made in the past, what reconstruction and archaeology mean. A brief demonstration of how weapons are used follows, and after that the actual training begins. The group is being built (a proto-Bulgarian army is formed) and the whole army is divided into bagi (groups of about 10 people) and with a marching step and a song, everyone goes to the training site. More experienced students can also dress in clothes typical of the proto-Bulgarians.

If you also want to get back a portion of what you spent on hotels, flights, or products, register at this link HERE and every new user receives up to a $10 bonus in their account.

At the training site, under the guidance of one of the Baghirs, the children learn important skills for Proto-Bulgarian society such as archery, whip rotation, horseback throwing, sword and shield fencing, etc. Most of the activities are in the form of games and competitions.
