Crete Travelogue: Crete's Most Beautiful Beaches

More information about the route, costs and impressions of the trip can be found HERE.

During our summer vacation on the island of Crete, we spent four days visiting four of the island’s top beaches, some of which are ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. One day we went to a water park—after all, what’s a vacation with kids without a water park? We set aside the other two days for cultural activities in the larger cities—namely, a stroll through Rethymno plus a visit to an olive factory and a cave on one day, and a city walk through Chania. (Personal opinion—Rethymno is much more charming than Chania. Chania is the second-largest city on Crete, while Rethymno is the third-largest.) These two days served a practical purpose: to give our sunburned skin a chance to heal a bit by keeping it out of the sun, at least for a little while.

Beaches we visited:

Balos Beach

Turquoise shallow water, white sands, incredible panorama. Beyond the rocks begins the deeper part, which is ideal for snorkeling. The beach is located at the very northwestern edge of Crete. There are several booths for food and drinks on the beach as well as umbrellas. The lagoon can be reached by car on a dirt road + walking 30 minutes down the slope or by an organized boat trip from Chania and Kissamos. The beach is calm from the point of view of tourists, but this is only until now before a few large corbes pour several hundred people into this heavenly place... Then the atmosphere radically changes. 🙂

Elafonissi Beach

Turquoise shallow water, lagoon, sand with a shade of pink, cedar trees and an ideal place for snorkeling. ov Crete. There are umbrellas and sunbeds and beach bars, but the beach is over-popular and summer time is overcrowded. There is a huge free parking nearby. Elafonisi is located in the southwestern part of the island of Crete. The name of the beach means "Deer Island". In addition to independently by car, the beach can also be reached by public bus from Chania - it leaves at 9:00 a.m., and back from Elafonisi leaves at 4:00 p.m.

Falassarna Beach

Falassarna beach regularly enters the rankings for the most beautiful beaches - it was declared the most beautiful on the island of Crete and one of the most beautiful in Greece and Europe. In addition to being alone by car, the beach can also be reached by public bus from Chania - it leaves at 8:30 and returns at 5:30 p.m. In some areas of this beach, the sand also had a pink tint. Large free parking. A good place to snorkel, especially in the southern part.

Seitan Limania Beach

A small, stony, hard-to-reach and picturesque beach, which is located about 10 km from the airport of Chania. His name means "devil's harbor." Probably the reason lies in the fact that to get to it, you need to walk on steep and rocky paths (everyone advises to wear the right shoes, but it is not impossible in flip flops :D). Typical of Crete, there are many goats around who often steal something from the luggage of visitors, so care must be taken.

Other beautiful beaches we didn't get to see:

Glika Nera

Right before Glicka Nera isn’t really “sweet water”, the name actually comes from a sweet‑water spring that bubbles out of the rocks by the beach. The beach is pebbly and you can reach it after about a 1‑hour walk or by boat.

Vai

On the island of Crete is the largest natural palm forest in Europe, and the beach near it is called Vai. It is located at the northeastern end of the island. The beach is sandy and has umbrellas and restaurants.

Preveli

Preveli Beach is located where the Megas Potamos River flows into the sea amidst a palm grove. And in the sea stands a lonely rock heart, one of the natural wonders of Greece.
